Hey y'all!

I needed a seafood man for Shrimp Week, so I called in my brother Bubba, the best seafood man I know!  Bubba owns the wonderful Uncle Bubba's Oyster House restaurant which has been in business for five years now, so he knows his way around a shrimp!  He also has a great cookbook called Uncle Bubba's Savannah Seafood Cookbook, which has more than 100 down home, Southern-style recipes.  I'm so proud of my brother!

Just like we used to do when we were kids, we pickled some shrimp together.  We used beautiful new glass jars to hold the dish, and the shrimp came out looking beautiful and tasty.  My son Bobby has a wonderful pickled shrimp recipe that we included below.  Bubba and I put our own spin on our pickled shrimp dishes.  I always suggest that when you cook something for the first time you follow the recipe but after that have fun with it and give the dish your own signature.  Bubba took his home with him, so he could enjoy it all by himself!

Congrats to the winners of this week's ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK Challenge: Kelly S and Phil Hutchings

And congrats to the winner of the Nuts Week Mad Libs: Amy Warfield

  • Paula,

That recipe looks really great. I haven't got any fresh herbs though. I would like to start growing some. Do you know if I could start the herbs in door and they keep through the winter?

Hey y'all!  Now you know I love being on my own in the kitchen.  But what I also love very much is getting out into the world and meeting my fans.  I have the best fans in the world, and it makes me so happy to see your faces and hear your stories.  Since this community is all about getting to know each other, I had my geeks launch a new section of Get Cookin', all about meeting each other.  You can click on Community Photos to see pictures of me and my family with all of you wonderful people.

I'll also being posting photos of all the crazy events I attend, so you can come along for the journey!  To kick off the section, I've posted a few pics of me getting ready to go on The Tonight Show.

If you have any pictures of yourself and your family meeting me and my family, upload them to your profile, flag them as "Cool" and we will post them to the Community Photos blog.  I can't wait to see everyone's pictures!

Shrimp Monday Mad Libs

Posted by Paula Deen on Monday, Oct 26, 2009 at 4:37 pm

Hey y'all!

Here we go with this week's addition of our weekly Mad Libs game!  We're doing the same prize as last week: I will post the selected Shrimp Week Mad Lib on my Facebook and Twitter, so everyone can see it!

Here is this week's story, and as always, don't forget to keep it PG!  ;)

I had just come back from a long day of shrimping.  We caught some big ones!  I was hungry, so I decided to cook the shrimp with some _____________ &_______________.  I usually _______________ the shrimp, which is my favorite, but I was feeling creative, so instead I ___________ the shrimp.  I was nervous how it would come out, but when I took the first bite of the dish I was surprised to find it was _____________!

Copy and paste your Mad Lib in the comments below.  Your deadline is tomorrow, Tuesday the 27th at 5pm EST.  Good luck!

Shrimp Time!

Posted by Paula Deen on Thursday, Oct 22, 2009 at 5:10 pm

Y'all, one of my favorite movies of all-time is Forrest Gump.  It's such a wonderful love story,  and does an amazing job capturing the bond between a son and his mama. Did you know that some scenes were even shot in Savannah?

You must be wondering why we're talking about movies on Get Cookin'.  Well I'm gonna tell you.  One of my favorite parts of the movie is when Forrest's best friend Bubba talks about shrimping and all the great ways to prepare shrimp.  I can just hear him going on and on "BBQ shrimp, boiled shrimp, garlic shrimp, shrimp cocktail, shrimp salad...".  That scene is so funny... but more importantly, so  true. This week on Get Cookin we are talking shrimp.

Another reason I love that scene is because just like Forrest, I have a Bubba who loves shrimp.  You know him as Uncle Bubba, but to me, he's my brother!  Bubba and I always have a blast together, especially when we pickle shrimp!  And he has a wonderful restaurant in Savannah called 'Uncle Bubba's Oyster House', which if you ask me, serves some of the finest seafood in the South!  If you're ever in town, and you've already eaten at The Lady & Sons, Uncle Bubba's is the place to go!

ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK

Submit photos or videos of you making a dish with Shrimp in it.  We need to see you in some way in the pictures or video to verify that it is your submission.  If you submit a photo, please write up a recipe in your blog. If you don’t know how to upload a blog, picture or video, you can read about it in our FAQ HERE.

Final time to submit your dish is Tuesday, October 27th at 5:00 PM PST.  The two winners will each get a signed copy of Bubba's Savannah Seafood Cookbook!
