Hey y'all!

This week was all about creative dishes you can put in a kid's Lunch-Box.  So in the spirit of 'Back To School Time', my nephew Jordan helped me in the kitchen to make some Cheeseburger Casserole.  Having your kids help with the cookin' is a truly wonderful thing.  You get to spend quality time with them, and they get a sense of pride in making their lunch.  They're sure to find that lunch extra delicious the next day at school, because they helped make it!

You can find a lot of great recipes for this in my new book 'Paula Deen's Cookbook for the Lunch-Box Set, which you can purchase HERE.

Congrats to the winners of this week's ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK Challenge: Mandy H and Sarah Hartwell!

  • This is a great thing Paula, my kids will love it!!  Oh, and by the way.. the whole family tried your Pumpkin Gooey Butter Cake today and we all say its a winner!!! YUMMY!!
  • That video was hilarious!  I'm so glad the boys did it "all by themselves!!" :)  I loved the "don't skimp on the cheese, y'all"...amen!!
Hooray! I feel so validated since we have a kids cooking blog.  We'll keep thinking up fun and creative ways to spend quality time in the kitchen.
  • I am one of those getting older women who started to twitter, and you were on the early list of those I follow!

The vid was a HOOT and a half for me.  I am forwarding it to my boys, who in the last year or so moved out on their own and in together.  They never had an interest in learning to cook, although I offered repeatedly.  Now they are buying their own groceries, and trying to learn not to burn things.

When they are over I try to teach them things like gravy making, etc, but a few good casseroles which are not expensive, stretch for a few meals and can be taken for lunch to work/school.  I will get brownie points for this one!

  • Paula--what kind of birds do I hear in the background at your house? My favorite bird of many years died a few years ago (cockatiel) and I'm thinking of getting another bird and doing research now.  I wondered what kind of bird/s you had?
  • WOW! THIS IS THE BEST SURPRISE EVER PAULA! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I can't wait to look at your new book and try out the recipes!

  • Congrats Mandy & Sarah!!!
  • Congrats to the winners!!
  • Congrats to the winners of the lunch box challenge. GREAT JOB

Kid's Lunch-Box Time!

Posted by Paula Deen on Thursday, Sep 24, 2009 at 7:26 pm

Hey y’all!

One of the biggest times of the year for any family is Back to School time.  And for us cooks out there, that means one thing: time to start filling lunch boxes again!  After all, there is no better way to send your child to school than with a delicious and nutritious meal in their lunch box (or brown bag!).  Earlier this week I went on The Today Show with Matt Lauer to talk about the book I wrote on this very subject, 'Paula Deen's Cookbook for the Lunch-Box Set".  It's full of fun, creative recipes that will put a smile on your child's face every time they sit down for lunch! You can buy the book HERE.

Kids enjoy their lunches more when they get involved in making them.  You know I just LOVE having my big kids in the kitchen with me.  But it can also be very fun to have some little ones help me, too.  I love teaching them what everything does, and showing them how to follow recipes.  They get so excited when everything is done.  It's so heartwarming!

So this week I invited some friends in to help me show y'all how to make a Cheeseburger Casserole.  We're gonna take you through it step-by-step.  And your challenge this week is to show the community what you like to make for your child's lunch box.

ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK

Submit photos or videos of you making a dish you could use put in a child's lunch box.  We need to see you in some way in the pictures or video to verify that it is your submission.  If you submit a photo, please write up a recipe in your blog. If you don’t know how to upload a blog, picture or video, you can read about it in our FAQ HERE.

Final time to submit your dish is Tuesday, September 29th at 5:00 PM PST.  The two winners will get a signed copy of my new book 'Cookbook for the Lunch-Box Set"
