Congrats To Tina Butler & Jill Higgins, What Great Peach Dishes! - Week 3

Posted by Paula Deen on Friday, Jun 26, 2009 at 5:45 pm

Hey Y’all!

Thank you so much for all the wonderful stories you submitted. They gave me some great ideas for Peach dishes to make this summer! What I love so much about this community is that y’all get to teach ME a thing or two about cookin’! And I just love to see and hear new recipes and how you created them.

For this week’s activity, I wanted to highlight two amazing dishes, Tina Butler, and her scrumptious-looking homemade Buttermilk Peach Ice Cream, and Jill Higgins with her High Cotton, a perfect peach-infused Summer cocktail. We’re gonna send both y’all a t-shirt and hat.

On a hot summer day, like we’re starting to get now, a glass of High Cotton or bowl of Peach Ice Cream sounds heavenly. If anyone of you try these dishes, please take a picture and send it on over!

See y’all soon for more great recipes and stories!

Love and Best Dishes,

Paula

  • This Week's Activity (Peaches)

One of our favorite things to make at our house especially in the summer is Homemade Ice Cream. This activity usually involves our kids. They love to help out and add all the ingredients to the ice cream maker and just sit and watch it spin until it stops. The look on their faces is so cute when we open the container and all the creamy goodness is inside. They get so excited to know that they helped make it.

There are so many flavors you can choose from, but one of our favorites is Homemade Buttermilk Peach Ice Cream. I love buttermilk so the buttermilk flavor is great plus it uses fresh peaches another perk. This ice cream just screams summer. Paula you say that Georgia has the best peaches, I can’t argue with that because I have never had a Georgia peach grace the likings of my palate. But I can say that Texas grows a pretty mean peach as well.Where ever you are from it doesn’t matter just get some fresh peaches and make this ice cream.

Photos of us preparing the ice cream and the finished product are in my photo album under (food photos)

    Buttermilk Peach Ice Cream

    2 - cups heavy cream
    2 - cups buttermilk
    2 - pounds (about 6 - 7) fresh peaches, peeled and sliced,
or 2 cups peaches, frozen or canned
    1 - cup of sugar
1 – 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
    1/2 - teaspoon cinnamon
    1 - teaspoon vanilla
2 - Tablespoons of lemon juice

Toss peeled and sliced peaches with sugar, lemon juice and cinnamon. Cover, refrigerate and let macerate at least for a couple of hours, preferably overnight or all day.
Macerate: is to soak fruit or other food in a liquid in order to soften it. During the process, the fruit becomes slightly softer and its flavor is infused. Puree 1 1/2 cups of the peaches (save the rest for mixing in after you make your ice cream), and then mix puree with cream, buttermilk, sweetened condensed milk and vanilla. Freeze according to your ice-cream maker’s instructions.

Cast Spotlight - Jamie Deen - Week 3

Posted by Paula Deen on Tuesday, Jun 23, 2009 at 4:01 pm

Hey Y'all!

You all know Jamie; he's my oldest boy and with my younger son Bobby he runs the day to day operations down at The Lady and Sons. Jamie has been right by my side since we started The Bag Lady lunch service back in 1989 and let me tell you that boy has a head for business!

He's a pretty fair writer, too; he's been writing his own blog over at ladyandsons.com, and judging from the comments, folks like what they're reading.

Leave a message on Jamie’s board saying hi!

Cooking With Y'All In Atlanta - Week 3

Posted by Paula Deen on Monday, Jun 22, 2009 at 2:15 pm

  • Cooking With Y'All In Atlanta!
    Hey Y'all

I am one lucky lady! I get to make a living doing two things I love: cooking and telling stories. Normally I do these things either in front of a TV camera or sitting down to write a cookbook. However, my favorite way to do these activities are in person with all of y’all. And, my most favorite time is when I get to cook and tell stories with my family! I got to do just that a few weeks back when Michael, Jamie, Bobby, and I went to Atlanta to give live cooking demonstrations and host two lunches at the Metro Cooking and Entertaining show in Atlanta.

It was such a fun day... and pretty exhausting! We arrived in Atlanta the night before and I had to go to sleep early because we did two live cooking shows and two lunches in about six hours. Also, my eyes were acting up real bad. I have this eye condition that started a few months ago and I just can’t shake it. But after spending the day with all those inspiring Survivors at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, my eye problem seemed like small potatoes.

We cooked roasted pork and lemon blossoms and spoke to crowds of almost 2,000 people! It was so great getting to meet so many of y’all, signing books, taking pictures, and hearing your stories. Jamie and Bobby had a lot of fun and Michael did a great job telling his funny jokes. He’s a great joke teller and I know he has been sharing a few jokes here.

An amazing part of going to these live cooking shows is seeing all the kids that are passionate about cooking. I met a group of really fantastic teenagers from Atlanta, and other young people dressed up. Y’all, it was so cute!  Greg was with us and made a really fun video of our trip. We’ll be posting it on Wednesday, I hope you like it!

    ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK

I just love doing live events in my home state. I was born in Albany and have lived in the great state of Georgia all my life. Georgia is famous for many things and one of them is peaches. I think it’s time that y’all start Get Cookin’ on that! This week I want to see videos or photos of you cooking a dish with peaches. Post your video or photo on your profile page and flag it as “Cool”. If you are not sure how to do that, bug Greg and he’ll help you. I’ll pick THREE of my favorites and those folk will get a Hey Y’all t-shirt and hat.

    Love and Best Dishes,

    Paula
