Week 2 - Race For The Cure

Congrats to Melanie Love, what a great story! - Week 2

Posted by Paula Deen on Friday, Jun 19, 2009 at 7:53 pm

Hey Y’all!

Thank you so much for all the wonderful stories you submitted. Bake sales are always so exciting cause you never know how you’re dish is gonna do. I’ve sure had my fair share of baking nerves!

For this week’s activity, I wanted to highlight Melanie Love, and her winning Gooey Butter Cake Bars. You all know I came from nothing, and had to overcome so much to get where I am today, so I love hearing about other people triumphing in the face of adversity. Melanie had a kitchen catastrophe and didn’t think her dish would do well, but she hung in there, kept on baking and had faith, and everything turned out great! I hope you all are as inspired by her story as I was.

We’re gonna send Melanie a signed cookbook for being such a great community member!

See you soon for more great recipes and stories.

Love and Best Dishes,

Paula
  • Bake Sale Story
    Well, not exactly a "sale".

In 2005, we were members of the booster club for the ECHL Augusta Lynx Hockey Team.  We (the hubby & I) helped plan the Christmas Party for the team.  These were young men who were all very far from home and didn't have enough time to participate in many holiday things with friends and family.  So, the booster club would do everything possible to make sure they had a good Christmas Party.

Part of the evening was to be a baking contest.  The club members all brought their baked goods and had numbers assigned to their items.  The players job was to taste, decide a winner and then, of couse, eat everything in sight.

I decided to make "Gooey-Butter-Cake-Bars".   The recipe is very similar to Paula's, but I had gotten it out of the newspaper years ago.  I decided to make 4 batches.  The first two batches burned on the bottom.  This was the day of the party and I really began to panic.  I'd also decided to make a gingerbread Christmas tree complete with icing and decorations.  Had a bad time with the icing because it decided to rain that day and the icing was too runny.  Nothing was turning out right!

Somehow, I managed to get all 4 batches of the Gooey-Butter-Cake-Bars done.  I even added red & green sprinkles to give them a Christmas look.  As far as the tree, I had to let the icing kind of "drip" down.  I placed a glass cake holder in the center of a large platter.  The tree sat on top of the cake holder and the cake bars surrounded the cake holder on the bottom.

Off we went to the party, in the rain.  I was really down because so much had gone wrong.  I knew there was no way anybody would like what I had made, but I had signed up & had to take something.  The players began tasting everything.  Then before I knew it, they had gone back to my creation and were calling out my number!

I won!!!!!  I had never won anything, especially having to with food!!  The prize was a $50 restaurant gift certificate and an embroidered apron.   The gooey butter bars were devoured in minutes.  Even the tree on top, that I had really only planned for decoration, was gone!!!

I think my husband was happier than I was.  Unfortunately, in the rush to get to the party, he had forgotten the camera.  So I have no pictures of that special night.

After that, some of the players requested me to bring them batches of bars.  I spent alot of time the rest of that season baking for some of them.  The players who were married asked for the recipe so their wives could bake, too.

Now, anytime I have to take a dessert somewhere, guess what I always take???

I was so honored that the Susan G. Komen Foundation asked me and my family to help kick-off the First Annual Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Race For the Cure in Savannah. We met the most amazing people and heard so many inspiring stories. Hope you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed being part of the event. Check out this link to learn more about the Susan G. Bobby even had his own Food Network show that he co-hosted with Jamie called Road Tasted and they have co-written a cookbook called “Y’All Come Eat”.

A couple weeks back, Bobby attended the Race for the Cure with Paula and helped kick off the race.

Leave a message on Bobby’s board saying hi and ask him whatever you want about southern food!

Racing for the Cure in Savannah - Week 2

  • Racing for the Cure in Savannah
    Hey Y'all!

Back in April, the city of Savannah hosted the First Annual Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Race for the Cure! The turnout was AMAZING! We had over 3,000 people show up. I was so proud of Savannah for coming out and supporting such a worthwhile cause.

My family and I were humbled when the wonderful people from the Susan G. Komen Foundation asked us to host a kick-off reception the evening before, and also to start the race. Michael and Bobby accompanied me to the reception and Jamie joined the three of us for the race.

We met such inspiring people. Cancer has touched almost everyone in some way but the amazing women and men at the Race showed us all that a positive attitude and being surrounded by great support is key to fighting the disease and becoming a Survivor.

This Wednesday we’ll be posting a video from the event. We had a great time and can’t wait for next year for an even bigger and better event!

    ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK

My family and I love supporting great causes, especially when they allow us to help our friends in Savannah. There were so many great volunteers at the event and a lot of them brought food. This got me thinking of bake sales. This week, I’d like you to share your stories (through video, photos, or blog) about a time when you participated in a bake sale. It can be for a school, organization, or local charity. Tell us about the event and the dish you prepared. The winning story will win a signed biography. I will give bonus points if you actually upload a video cooking the dish from your story. :)

Please post your submission to your profile and flag it as "Cool". If you have any questions about how to post photos, videos, or blogs, look here: FAQ.

Finally, I encourage all of you to learn more about the Race for the Cure. Here is a link to the site and a link to donate to this amazing organization.

    Love and Best Dishes,

    Paula
